Little Rock music connections
Little Rock may be more widely known for and celebrities in other domains, but has an underappreciated musical heritage. In that domain, rockabilly and bluegrass music may come to mind before other genres, but Little Rock was also a punk rock hotbed in the 1990s, helping launch such bands as Green Day.
On the classical front, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, puts on more than 60 concerts throughout its season and is renowned throughout the country. It has played host to guest luminaries such as Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma and Maya Angelou. Also, Little Rock was the birthplace of Florence Price, the first African American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer.
